An aesthetics of knowledge

Jacques Rancière

Thinking between the disciplines
An aesthetics of knowledge

What is to be understood by the call for an “aesthetics of knowledge”? The thesis I would like to present is simple and says: to speak of an aesthetic dimension of knowledge means to speak of a dimension of ignorance which dissects the idea itself and the practice of knowledge. Aesthetics is an historically fixed concept that designates a specific system of visibility and comprehensibility of art and which inscribes itself in a reconfiguration of categories of sensuous experience and its interpretation. Knowledge cannot be aesthetic. Aesthetics is indeed the division of knowledge, the disturbance of that order of sensuous experience which brings social positions into agreement with tastes and attitudes, with areas of knowledge and illusions. At that moment, however, when philosophy wants to ground its status as the discipline of disciplines, the following inversion occurs: the foundation of the foundation is a story. Philosophy says to knowledge, to the sciences which are sure of their methods: methods are stories that people tell. This is meant to say that they are weapons in a war; they are not tools which allow a domain to be exploited, but weapons which serve to demarcate its continually insecure border.

Inästhetik will internationale zeitgenössische Konfigurationen sichtbar machen und operiert daher bewusst mehrsprachig.
